What Should I Do If Water Is Coming Through My Ceiling?
Seeing water dripping from your ceiling can be alarming, especially during one of South Florida’s heavy rainstorms. Whether the water is coming from a roof leak, plumbing problem or another source, acting quickly can help limit the damage to your home.
Water can travel above ceilings and behind walls before you ever see it. What looks like a small drip may mean that insulation, drywall and other materials are already wet.

1. Stay Away From Electrical Hazards
Safety comes first. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
If water is dripping near a light fixture, ceiling fan, outlet or other electrical source, stay away from the affected area. Do not touch wet electrical equipment or stand in water near electrical equipment. The EPA recommends shutting off electricity when it is safe to do so if flooding or water intrusion creates an electrical hazard.
2. Protect Your Belongings If It Is Safe
If you can safely access the room, move furniture, electronics, rugs and other valuables away from the affected area.
You can place buckets or containers beneath active drips to help catch water, but remember that collecting the dripping water does not solve the underlying problem.
Be especially cautious if the ceiling is sagging or bulging. Saturated drywall can become heavy and may eventually collapse.
3. Find and Stop the Source of the Water
The next step is determining where the water is coming from.
Common causes include:
- Roof leaks and storm damage
- Broken or leaking plumbing
- Overflowing fixtures
- Air conditioning or condensation problems
- Leaking appliances
- Wind-driven rain
If the problem is plumbing-related and you can safely shut off the appropriate water supply, doing so may help stop additional water from entering the property.

4. Document the Damage
Take photos and videos of the affected areas before cleanup begins when it is safe to do so.
